Julian Schnabel
Portrait Paintings 1997
oil, enamel and resin on canvas, all 108 x102 in.

These eight full-length formal portraits depict the artist's family and friends. The format and the sitter's costumes harken back to Spanish court painting, but the surfaces and coloration do not. The images are thickly coated in gleaming resin, aside from the mysterious and intrusive white shapes which are painted on the resin itself. In a rather humorous aside, the apparently ponderous and pompous frames are in fact made of lightweight fiberglass.
