|Mary Ellen Carroll "100 German Men", an installation and book
at Printed Matter, 77 Wooster Street Nov 3 - Nov 21 '98
Carroll began the work in Berlin and completed it in Manhattan in which every man that was encountered on the street was asked, where are you from; implying what is your ethnic heritage? When the response was "German" an additional question was posed, "May your photograph be taken?" Carroll repeated the process until 100 photographs were accumulated, but in the asking had close to 1,000 encounters. Within the book and installation, images of these 100 men who identified themselves as being German are paired, through a random process, with fictitious German names.
